Don’t Forget to Take Your Decor to the Floor
Whether you’ve pushed your nautical decorating theme to the max with a boat-shaped bed and cabinets, or whether you’ve just gone full-on nautical with a room’s patterns and window coverings, you’ll want to consider a funky nautical area rug to finish off the look.

When we think of flooring, we tend to think conservatively. Let’s face it; it takes a level of bravery to introduce a bold area rug that features photos or funky patterns into our decorating scheme. However, don’t be shy! There are ways to feature busy, artistic area rugs into a room without theme-over-kill.
Here are some fundamentals to consider when you’re choosing a funky nautical area rug:
- If you’re selecting a very busy colorful area rug, and there’s already a lot of pattern in your furnishings, bedding or drapes, position the carpet away from those busy pieces. If the room is large enough, place that lively area rug in another part of the room. In other words, evenly distribute your patterns around the room.
- Get your color palette down to three or four main choices max.
- If your nautical area rug features a pattern, remember the general rule about ‘scaling’ when mixing patterns – What is ‘scaling’? You can combine a smaller scaled pattern in the same color family with a larger sized pattern in the same color family – In other words, don’t select a large scale patterned rug if there are extensive scale patterns in other decor items sitting near or on top of that area rug.
- You can mix patterns – If the room is large enough, you can get away with 3 to 5 different designs. Just remember the rule about keeping your colors down to three or four, and of course, the practice described above about ‘scaling.’
